I have a passion for birds, particularly those that live at the water’s edge; from elegant egrets to the tiniest sandpipers, their lives are inextricably linked to the tides and to their environment. A minimalist, pared back approach allows me to celebrate their beauty, spirit and ephemeral nature as they become the stars of the show.
In keeping with my claim to be a visual artist, the challenge for me is to manipulate light from a fresh and unexpected perspective using my chosen tool – the camera. I favour high key light and sympathetic backdrops such as water and sky, and I prefer to photograph during the pre-dawn and post sunset periods when the light is grey, or to photograph looking towards the sun. Cloudy days are also ideal. I have learned how to set the camera’s exposure so that minimal post-processing is required – I do not remove backgrounds in Photoshop. I often use a slow shutter speed in order to accentuate the movement of the subject – the revelation to me is that a blurred image can sometimes bring into focus an apparently chaotic scene in a way that a sharper image cannot. I do not always want to show detail, but rather, I am evoking an emotional response to both the subject matter and to the location. A different approach can yield a different kind of magic.
In 2012 I was awarded a Fellowship in Visual Art by the Royal Photographic Society. I am a member of both the Arena Group of Photographers and Landscape Collective UK and I have work in private collections all over the world. I print on acid free Permajet Fine Art photographic paper and each image is signed and is part of a limited edition of 25.
