Louise is interested in the solitude and isolation of extreme scenery; trying to capture the mysterious, mercurial nature of light on the land and sea. Her passion focuses on big skies and the emotive impact of light on the land. In particular, Louise is fascinated by early morning and last light, striving to capture the “exquisite, elusive, vaporous and ephemeral luminosity” of it. The absence of any human presence is a deliberate decision, lending a timeless quality to the work, transporting the viewer back to past millennia when our impact on the planet was more benign.
Louise often creates texture in her work, using the oil, before applying many layers of translucent oil glazes. She often uses metallic pigment in the under-layers, giving the illusion of the light dancing as it moves around the painting.
Louise is inspired by the remote landscape of Ireland, the Peak District both places where she grew-up, and the river she lives by.
