Gilly Mound

Gilly’s pieces are painted in acrylic on canvas. She has a textile background so occasionally a stitch or collage will find it’s way into her work. Her inspiration comes from many common-place themes: Ceramics, houses, boats, birds, fish, the countryside where she lives, and the coast. Her compositions may show only loose reference to realism or actual places. The pictures she paints are more about the shapes, colours and textures of the themes she studies. Through these she hopes to convey a sense of tranquility via an ordinary scene – to show the essence and beauty of a subject as it appears to her. In the early 90’s Gilly took the opportunity to fulfil a long-held ambition to study fashion & textiles at U.W.E Bristol. Her tutor was the embroiderer Janet Haigh, and it was her classes which inspired Gilly to follow a textile-art route. Gilly is influenced by artists such as Matisse, a lover of textiles, and Mary Fedden whose wonderful still life works give credence and beauty to everyday objects and scenes. Her paintings are inspired by many similar things, including her home in the beautiful Teme valley where she has a studio and which she shares with her husband John, their young Airedale George and a few happy chickens!
